OUR STORY

At Men’s Health and Wellbeing WA we are all about improving the health and wellbeing outcomes for boys and men in Western Australia.

We believe that Western Australian men are significant and positive contributors to West Australian life through their diverse family, work and community roles.

We believe that to empower men to reach their potential and enjoy a long and high quality life to continue this positive involvement, supporting the health and wellbeing of men is an important and critical community issue.

We believe that to achieve this we must focus on promoting and facilitating men’s healthy living, strengthening health and community service delivery to men and that we must focus on the health and wellbeing issues that have the greatest impact on men’s quality and length of life.

Men’s Health and Wellbeing WA is committed to providing the leadership to achieve these things.

We achieve this by:

  • Delivering evidence-based health education and promotion for service providers and consumers.
  • Influencing men’s health policy, funding, strategy, and initiatives.
  • Providing resources for service providers and consumers.
  • Initiating cutting-edge research and applied reports.
  • Providing accurate men’s health and wellbeing information to the sector.
  • Representing the needs of men in the health, wellbeing, public health and community sector.

Many seem to accept that men are not good at taking action for their health.

We believe that men will be engaged if you build programs and services that understand and are tailored towards men’s needs; that utilise a “go to where men are” approach; and build on men’s strengths rather than focus on deficits.

This is our journey and we believe that we can make a real difference.

Our History

Men’s Health and Wellbeing WA was established in 1997 by a passionate group of twenty men from a diverse range of professional and social backgrounds. However, what these men had in common was a drive to support community services and men to achieve better health and wellbeing outcomes for the boys and men of Western Australia.

This group of men saw the growing challenge of poor health and wellbeing outcomes for many men across the community. This group of men believed that improving boy’s and men’s physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, sexual, relationship, social and community health and wellbeing was both important and possible. This group of men were pioneers. No other State or Territory had anything similar and so these courageous men lead the way to incorporate as an association and become the state’s peak body for men’s health and wellbeing. They called themselves the Men’s Health Independent Advisory Network.

The Men’s Health Independent Advisory Network soon merged with the Men’s Health and Wellbeing Association Inc. In the years following, the association has tirelessly advocated for funding and initiatives to improve the state of men’s health in WA and provided a well-respected and invaluable service to the community.

Over the years, there have been a couple of name changes – from the Men’s Health Independent Advisory Network, to MAN – Healthier Directions for Males, to our current name of Men’s Health and Wellbeing WA. However, what hasn’t changed is our mission to improve the health and wellbeing of men in Western Australia

From the humble beginnings of this band of volunteers having a yarn in Fremantle WA, Men’s Health and Wellbeing WA has evolved into a mature association that receives ongoing support from the Department of Health and individuals across the WA community. Inspired by a small group of men who wanted to make a difference, the men and women of MAN continues to strive to improve the health and wellbeing of all boys and men in Western Australia.

We are dedicated to providing the leadership to drive improved health and wellbeing outcomes for boys and men in the Western Australian community.
